Dental treatment
I diagnose and treat non-complex root canal cases, with referral if specialist care is needed.
I aim to preserve the tooth when the nerve is affected. In non-complex cases I can perform root canal treatment in general practice; if anatomy, infection or prognosis suggest it, I discuss referral.
The information on this page is general. Whether a treatment is suitable depends on an individual examination, diagnosis and discussion of the available options.

Frequent questions
Root canal treatment helps preserve a tooth when the pulp is inflamed, infected or damaged. It consists of cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, sealing it and then restoring it to recover function.
It may be needed in cases of deep decay, persistent pain, intense sensitivity to cold or heat, infection, trauma or a lesion close to the nerve. Diagnosis requires a clinical examination and, when appropriate, X-rays or other tests.
The aim is to preserve the tooth, but this is not always possible. The prognosis depends on the condition of the root, the amount of remaining tooth structure, the presence of cracks, previous infections and whether the tooth can be properly restored afterwards.
Some cases are more complex because of difficult anatomy, calcified canals, retreatments, fractured instruments, large lesions or roots with marked curves. In those cases, referral to an endodontic specialist may be more appropriate.
After root canal treatment, the tooth needs an appropriate restoration. In some cases a reconstruction is enough; in others, a crown or a more protective restoration may be needed, especially if the tooth has lost a lot of structure.
